Button alkaline (LR / AG)

LR44 battery: equivalents & specs

The LR44 is a 1.5 volt alkaline button cell, 11.6 mm across and 5.4 mm tall. AG13, A76, L1154 and 157 are the same battery under different brand names. The silver-oxide SR44 (sold as 357) fits the same slot and lasts noticeably longer.

Buying and replacement notes

Every manufacturer stamps its own code on this cell. Energizer sells it as A76, generic Chinese brands as AG13, Maxell as LR44, and some retailers as L1154 or 157. All of them are the identical 11.6 x 5.4 mm alkaline cell, so buy whichever is cheapest per unit from a brand you trust.

For anything that matters, spend the extra dollar on the silver-oxide SR44 (357). It holds 1.55 V almost until it dies, while an alkaline LR44 sags from 1.5 V down toward 1.0 V through its life. Calipers, meters and watches read more accurately and run 50 to 100 percent longer on silver oxide.

Frequently asked questions

Are LR44 and AG13 the same battery?
Yes. AG13 is the generic industry code and LR44 is the IEC designation for the identical cell: 1.5 V alkaline, 11.6 mm diameter, 5.4 mm tall. A76, L1154, LR1154, 157 and GPA76 also refer to this exact battery, so any of them will work.
Can I use a 357 battery instead of an LR44?
Yes, and it is usually an upgrade. The 357 is the silver-oxide SR44, identical in size, with a steadier 1.55 V output and roughly twice the capacity of an alkaline LR44. Watches, calipers and meters run longer and read more accurately on it.
How long does an LR44 last?
It depends on the load. In a digital caliper used occasionally, expect 6 to 18 months. In a laser pointer or lighted toy running continuously, a fresh set may last only a few hours. Shelf life is around 3 to 5 years; alkaline cells slowly self-discharge and can leak when fully drained.
What voltage should a good LR44 read?
A fresh LR44 reads about 1.55 to 1.6 V with no load. Once it drops below roughly 1.3 V under load, most devices start to misbehave: dim lasers, faded LCD digits or unreliable readings. Replace it at that point rather than waiting for a total failure.
