Button alkaline (LR / AG)

LR43 battery: equivalents & specs

The LR43 is a 1.5 volt alkaline button cell measuring 11.6 mm across and 4.2 mm tall, a little thinner than the common LR44. It also sells as AG12, LR1142 and 186. The silver-oxide SR43, marketed as 386 or 301, is the same size and outlasts it.

Buying and replacement notes

The LR43 is easy to confuse with the LR44 because both are 11.6 mm wide; the LR43 is 1.2 mm thinner. A LR44 will not seat in a properly sized LR43 compartment, and an LR43 in an LR44 slot may lose contact. Check the height before ordering. In watches or anything measurement related, choose the silver-oxide 386 (high drain) or 301 (low drain) instead; they hold voltage far better through their life.

Frequently asked questions

Is AG12 the same as LR43?
Yes. AG12 is the generic code and LR43 the IEC name for the same 1.5 V alkaline cell, 11.6 mm in diameter and 4.2 mm tall. LR1142, L1142 and 186 are additional names for the identical battery, so all can be swapped freely.
Can an LR44 replace an LR43?
No. Both are 11.6 mm in diameter, but the LR44 is 5.4 mm tall against the LR43's 4.2 mm. The thicker LR44 will not fit a correctly built LR43 compartment, and forcing it can bend the contacts. Use an LR43, AG12 or the silver-oxide 386.
What is the silver-oxide equivalent of the LR43?
The SR43, sold as 386 (high drain) or 301 (low drain). It matches the LR43's 11.6 x 4.2 mm dimensions, delivers a steadier 1.55 V and offers around 120 mAh. For watches and instruments it is the better choice; for cheap toys the alkaline is fine.
