Button alkaline (LR / AG)

LR726 battery: equivalents & specs

The LR726 is a 1.5 volt alkaline button cell, 7.9 mm across and 2.6 mm tall, also marked AG2, LR59 or 196. Its silver-oxide counterparts are the 397 and 396 (SR726), which share the exact size and are the standard choice for watches.

Buying and replacement notes

Like the rest of the AG series, the AG2 exists mainly to keep manufacturing costs down in disposable gadgets and factory-fresh fashion watches. It works fine in blinking toys and novelty lights. When one turns up in a watch, replace it with a 397 (or 396 for movements with backlights or chronograph motors) and the watch will keep better time for two to three times as long.

Frequently asked questions

What does AG2 replace?
AG2 is interchangeable with LR726, LR59, L726 and 196; all are the same 1.5 V alkaline cell measuring 7.9 x 2.6 mm. The silver-oxide 397 (SR726SW) and 396 (SR726W) fit the same compartment and are preferred for watches.
397 or 396: which replaces my AG2?
Both fit. The 397 (SR726SW) is the low-drain version for simple analog watches; the 396 (SR726W) is built for higher pulse loads such as watches with alarms or lights. For a plain two- or three-hand watch, buy the 397.
How much longer does silver oxide last than an AG2?
Typically two to three times as long in a watch. The SR726 versions carry around 30 mAh against roughly 25 for the alkaline, but the bigger win is voltage: silver oxide holds 1.55 V almost to the end, while alkaline output sinks steadily and stops the movement early.
