Button alkaline (LR / AG)

LR626 battery: equivalents & specs

The LR626 is a 1.5 volt alkaline button cell, 6.8 mm across and 2.6 mm tall, also labeled AG4, LR66 or 177. It is the low-cost stand-in for the world's most common watch battery, the silver-oxide SR626SW (377), which shares the exact same dimensions.

  • SR626SW / 377: The watch-standard silver-oxide cell in the same size; steadier voltage and roughly double the capacity.

Buying and replacement notes

Cheap fashion watches ship with an AG4 from the factory because it costs a few cents. When it dies, replace it with a 377 (SR626SW) rather than another alkaline: the silver-oxide cell holds 1.55 V until nearly empty, roughly doubles the run time to two or three years, and is far less likely to leak inside the movement. The price difference is under a dollar at most battery counters.

Frequently asked questions

Is AG4 the same as a 377 battery?
Same size, different chemistry. AG4 (LR626) is 1.5 V alkaline; 377 (SR626SW) is 1.55 V silver oxide. They are physically interchangeable at 6.8 x 2.6 mm, and the 377 is the better choice for any watch because of its flat discharge and longer life.
Can I put an LR626 in my watch?
It will run the watch, but expect roughly half the life of a 377 and less accurate timekeeping as the voltage sags. Alkaline button cells are also more leak-prone. For a watch you care about, the silver-oxide 377 is worth the small extra cost.
What do the codes LR66 and 177 mean?
They are just alternative names for the same cell. LR66 is the older IEC-style code, LR626 the dimensional code (6.8 mm x 2.6 mm), 177 a common retail number, and AG4 the generic factory code. Any battery carrying one of these markings is identical.
