CR2025 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR2025 is a 3 volt lithium coin cell, 20 mm across and 2.5 mm thick, holding 160 to 170 mAh. It sits between the CR2016 and CR2032 in the 20 mm family and is one of the most common key fob and remote control batteries in circulation.

  • CR2032: Same diameter, 0.7 mm thicker, about 40 percent more capacity; swappable only when the holder tolerates the height.
  • CR2016: Thinner sibling at 1.6 mm with roughly half the capacity.

⚠️ Keep coin lithium cells away from children. A swallowed 20 mm cell lodges easily in the esophagus and causes severe chemical burns within two hours; seek emergency care immediately if ingestion is suspected.

Buying and replacement notes

The eternal question with this cell is whether a CR2032 can stand in for it. Same diameter, same 3 volts, 0.7 mm more thickness and about 40 percent more capacity. In holders with spring contacts the swap usually works and lasts longer; in tight fobs the cover will not latch and forcing it bends contacts. When the compartment is molded to depth, respect the number on the old cell.

Can I use a CR2032 instead of a CR2025?
If the compartment physically accepts the extra 0.7 mm of thickness, yes; voltage and diameter are identical and you gain capacity. Many fobs and remotes are tolerant, but if the battery door resists closing, fit the correct CR2025 instead of forcing it.
What is the difference between CR2025 and CR2016?
Thickness and capacity: 2.5 mm and roughly 165 mAh versus 1.6 mm and 90 mAh, at the same 20 mm diameter and 3 V. Devices are designed around one height. Also note some gadgets stack two CR2016s for 6 V, which a single CR2025 cannot replace.
How long does a CR2025 last in a key fob?
Two to three years of ordinary clicking. Proximity-style smart keys drain faster because they listen continuously, often needing a new cell yearly. Weakening range, or the car complaining about a low key battery, are the standard replacement cues.
