CR1225 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR1225 is a 3 volt lithium coin cell, 12.5 mm across and 2.5 mm tall, holding around 50 mAh, the most of the 12.5 mm family. It powers digital thermometers, compact remotes and small medical gadgets that need more reserve than a CR1220 offers.

Buying and replacement notes

The extra half millimeter over the CR1220 buys about a third more capacity, which is why medical and thermometer makers favor this size. The BR1225 variant matters here: it trades a little capacity for a wider operating temperature range and lower self-discharge, and some devices, particularly ones that live in cars or outbuildings, specify it deliberately. If the old cell says BR, replace with BR.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CR1225 interchangeable with the CR1220?
They share the 12.5 mm diameter but differ in height, 2.5 versus 2.0 mm. Compartments with springy contacts often take either; rigid ones do not. The CR1225 carries roughly 50 mAh against 38, so use it where it fits and the device allows.
What is the difference between CR1225 and BR1225?
Chemistry. CR cells use manganese dioxide and deliver more capacity; BR cells use carbon monofluoride and work across wider temperatures with lower self-discharge. Same size and voltage. Devices exposed to heat or cold, like tire sensors and car electronics, often specify BR.
How long does a CR1225 last in a thermometer?
Years, in typical household use. A digital thermometer draws current only during its measurement cycle, well under a minute at a time. The most common failure is not depletion but corrosion from storage in a humid bathroom drawer, so check the contacts too.
