CR1616 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR1616 is a 3 volt lithium coin cell, 16 mm across and 1.6 mm thick, rated 50 to 55 mAh. It is a classic key fob battery for older Honda and Ford remotes and also serves bike computers, slim digital watches and heart-rate sensor pods.

  • CR1620: Same diameter, 2.0 mm tall with about 75 mAh; fits only if the compartment tolerates the extra height.

Buying and replacement notes

Fob repairs are where most people meet this cell. Check the old battery before assuming: several fobs of the same era use the thicker CR1620 or the wider CR2016 instead, and the three are not reliably interchangeable. The 16 mm family runs CR1616, CR1620 and CR1632 at 1.6, 2.0 and 3.2 mm heights, with capacity climbing steeply as thickness increases.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a CR1620 in place of a CR1616?
Only when the holder clearly accepts a 2.0 mm cell; many fob cases are molded tight to 1.6 mm and will not snap shut over the thicker cell. Where it does fit, the CR1620 delivers about 40 percent more capacity at the same 3 V.
What key fobs use the CR1616?
Many 1990s through 2010s Honda and Acura remotes, older Ford flip keys and various motorcycle fobs. Always confirm against the cell you remove or the owner's manual, because manufacturers switched sizes between model years without changing the fob's appearance.
How long does a CR1616 last in a fob?
One to two years typically. Its 55 mAh is on the small side for modern fobs that listen for proximity, which is why newer cars moved to CR2032 and CR2450 sizes. Shrinking range is the usual first sign of a fading cell.
