BR1225 battery: equivalents & specs

The BR1225 is the wide-temperature cousin of the CR1225: a 3 volt lithium coin cell, 12.5 mm by 2.5 mm, built with carbon monofluoride chemistry. It runs from roughly -30 to +80 degrees C and self-discharges more slowly than a CR cell.

Buying and replacement notes

BR cells exist for environments that punish standard lithium coins: parked cars in summer, unheated outbuildings, industrial cabinets. The trade-off is weaker pulse current delivery, so a BR1225 suits memory backup and slow sensors rather than radio transmitters. A CR1225 fits the same holder and works in mild conditions, but if an engineer specified BR, they had a thermal reason.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a BR1225 with a CR1225?
In a room-temperature device, usually yes; size and voltage match. In anything that sees heat or cold extremes, such as automotive modules or outdoor sensors, keep the BR type: CR cells lose capacity quickly outside roughly -20 to +60 degrees C and self-discharge faster.
Why do BR batteries cost more?
Carbon monofluoride chemistry is more expensive to produce and sells in smaller volumes than mainstream CR cells. You are paying for a wider temperature window, a flatter long-term discharge and shelf life that can exceed ten years, which matters in set-and-forget equipment.
How do I know if my device needs BR or CR?
Read the old cell. Manufacturers print the exact type, and service manuals list it. If the marking says BR1225, fit BR. If you cannot tell and the device lives indoors, a quality CR1225 is a reasonable substitute; harsh environments call for BR.
