Coin lithium (CR)

CR2012 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR2012 is the thinnest common 20 mm lithium coin cell: 3 volts, 20 mm across and just 1.2 mm thick, holding around 50 mAh. It exists for card-style remotes and ultra-slim devices where even the CR2016's 1.6 mm is too much.

  • CR2016: Slightly thicker 1.6 mm cell in the same diameter; check compartment tolerance before substituting.

Buying and replacement notes

This is a niche size, produced mainly by Panasonic and Sony/Murata, and it is often out of stock at retail. Some devices with springy contacts will accept a CR2016 in its place, but card-type keys and slim enclosures usually will not close over the extra 0.4 mm. Buy from a seller with turnover; thin cells suffer proportionally more from shelf aging.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a CR2016 instead of a CR2012?
Sometimes. The CR2016 shares the 20 mm diameter but is 0.4 mm thicker. Compartments with flexible contacts accept it and gain capacity; rigid card-key housings will not close properly. If the device is a slim card remote, source the exact CR2012.
Why is the CR2012 hard to find?
It is a low-volume size made for a narrow class of ultra-thin devices, so pharmacies and supermarkets rarely stock it. Electronics distributors and online marketplaces carry the Panasonic and Murata versions; check the manufacturing date when buying.
How long does a CR2012 last?
In a card remote used a few times a day, roughly one to two years. Its 50 mAh is modest, and thin cells have higher internal resistance, so cold weather and heavy use shorten life more than they would for a CR2025 or CR2032.
