2CR1/3N battery: equivalents & specs

The 2CR1/3N, sold by Duracell as the 28L, is a 6 volt lithium battery made of two CR1/3N cells stacked into an 11.6 by 21.6 mm cylinder, rated about 160 mAh. It is the lithium alternative in the PX28 family alongside the alkaline 4LR44 and silver 4SR44.

Compatible replacements

  • 4LR44 / 4SR44: The alkaline and silver 6 V batteries this lithium pack substitutes for in most PX28 devices; marginally different dimensions, so confirm fit.
  • CR1/3N: The single 3 V cell this battery stacks two of.

Buying and replacement notes

Three batteries compete for the same devices: the alkaline 4LR44, silver 4SR44 and this lithium 28L. The lithium is slightly narrower and shorter than the other two, which most battery compartments tolerate, and it wins decisively on shelf life (ten-plus years) and cold-weather output. That makes it the pick for a camera used a few times a year or a collar worn on winter hunts.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 28L the same as the 4LR44?
Functionally interchangeable in most devices, not identical. The 28L is lithium at 6 V, 11.6 x 21.6 mm; the 4LR44 is alkaline at 6 V, 13 x 25.2 mm. Most PX28-family compartments have sprung contacts that accommodate both. The lithium lasts far longer in storage.
Why choose lithium for a dog collar or camera?
Shelf life and cold. A 28L installed today still holds over 90 percent of its charge in five years, and it delivers full power below freezing where alkaline output collapses. Devices used intermittently waste less battery to self-discharge with lithium.
What does 2CR1/3N mean?
Two CR1/3N cells in one package. Each CR1/3N is a 3 V lithium cell one-third the height of an N battery; stacking two gives 6 V. The related codes PX28L and 28L place it in the PX28 battery family alongside the silver PX28 and alkaline PX28A.
