CR2 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR2 is a compact 3 volt lithium cylinder, 15.6 mm across and 27 mm long, holding 750 to 850 mAh. Smaller than the CR123A it is often confused with, it powers golf and hunting rangefinders, compact film cameras and older Instax models.

Buying and replacement notes

Rangefinders keep this format alive: nearly every golf and archery rangefinder takes a single CR2. It shares the CR123A's strengths (ten-year shelf life, cold tolerance, strong pulse delivery) in a smaller package with about half the capacity. The name collides confusingly with the CR2032 coin cell and the CR2016; the CR2 is a cylinder, not a coin, and none of them interchange.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CR2 the same as a CR123A?
No. Both are 3 V photo lithium cylinders, but the CR2 is 15.6 x 27 mm against the CR123A's 17 x 34.5 mm. The CR123A neither fits a CR2 compartment nor vice versa. Devices are built for exactly one of the two; check the old cell.
What battery does my golf rangefinder take?
Almost certainly a CR2; it is the de facto standard for laser rangefinders from Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold and others. A quality cell lasts a season or two of regular play. Keep a spare in your bag since big-box stores do not always stock the size.
Does a rechargeable CR2 exist?
Yes, sold as RCR2 or 15270 li-ion cells at 3.6 to 3.7 V. The voltage exceeds the primary cell's 3 V, so only use them in devices that state compatibility. For rangefinders, most makers recommend sticking with primary CR2 cells for accuracy and safety.
