CR-P2 battery: equivalents & specs

The CR-P2, also sold as the 223, is a 6 volt lithium battery pack containing two CR-size cells side by side in a 35 by 19.5 by 36 mm block, rated around 1400 mAh. It powered a generation of 1990s film SLRs and still runs irrigation timers today.

Buying and replacement notes

The CR-P2 and 2CR5 were the twin 6 volt workhorses of the autofocus film era, and cameras were keyed to accept exactly one; the shapes prevent cross-insertion. Garden watering timers adopted the CR-P2 for its long life outdoors, which keeps the size in production. Its keyed terminals on one face make correct insertion foolproof, so if it will not seat, you have the wrong pack, not a stuck battery.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CR-P2 and a 2CR5?
Both are 6 V lithium photo packs of similar capacity, but the CR-P2 is a squat block with side-by-side cells (35 x 19.5 x 36 mm) while the 2CR5 is a stepped twin-tube shape. Cameras and devices accept only their designed shape; the two never interchange.
Is the 223 battery the same as the CR-P2?
Yes. 223 is the ANSI retail number, used by Duracell as DL223 and Energizer as EL223AP, for the identical 6 V lithium pack. Any listing showing the two-cell block shape and 6 V is this battery, regardless of which code is largest on the label.
How long does a CR-P2 last in a water timer?
Usually a full watering season and often two; lithium chemistry shrugs off the outdoor temperature swings that kill alkaline packs. Replace it at the start of each season anyway if a failed valve closure would flood something you care about.
