2CR5 battery: equivalents & specs

The 2CR5 is a 6 volt lithium battery pack shaped like two joined cylinders in a stepped block, 34 by 17 by 45 mm, holding around 1400 mAh. It was the battery of the Canon EOS film era and remains in production for cameras and instruments.

Buying and replacement notes

If you shoot a Canon EOS film body (EOS 5, EOS 3, many Elans) or various Nikon and Minolta SLRs, this is your battery, and fresh cells from Panasonic or Energizer still deliver years of shooting per pack. Its keyed shape makes wrong insertion impossible. Prices vary wildly between sellers for identical stock, so compare; and check date codes, because a pack made five years ago has quietly spent shelf life you paid for.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2CR5 still being made?
Yes. Panasonic, Energizer (EL2CR5) and Duracell (DL245) all continue production, chiefly for the film photography revival and for medical and industrial devices that standardized on it. Availability online is good even where camera shops have vanished.
What cameras use the 2CR5?
A large slice of late-film-era SLRs: most Canon EOS film bodies, several Nikon N-series, Minolta Maxxums and others, plus some medium format gear. The camera's battery door or manual confirms it; the stepped twin-tube shape is unmistakable.
How many rolls of film does a 2CR5 shoot?
Dozens of rolls in a typical autofocus SLR, since lithium handles the AF motor and flash charging efficiently. Heavy flash use is the main drain. Carrying one spare covers a serious trip; the pack loses only about 1 percent of charge per year in a bag.
