Silver-oxide watch (SR)

SR754W battery: equivalents & specs

The SR754 is a tall 1.55 volt silver-oxide button cell, 7.9 mm across and 5.4 mm high, holding 70 to 80 mAh. The high-drain version sells as the 393 (SR754W) and the low-drain watch version as the 309 (SR754SW); both share the exact same case.

Buying and replacement notes

This size is unusual in that the high-drain 393 is the more commonly stocked number, because the cell's height and capacity attract instrument and device makers, not just watchmakers. For a simple analog watch the 309 is the tuned choice; for anything with motors, lights or measurement electronics the 393 is right. The alkaline AG5 fits but gives up about a quarter of the capacity and all of the voltage stability.

Frequently asked questions

Are 393 and 309 the same battery?
Same case, different tuning. Both are SR754 silver-oxide cells at 7.9 x 5.4 mm and 1.55 V. The 393 (SR754W) is high drain for instruments and feature watches; the 309 (SR754SW) is low drain for simple analog movements. Either physically fits.
What is the alkaline version of the 393?
The AG5, also sold as LR754, LR48 or 193. It matches the dimensions at 1.5 V but holds around 60 mAh versus up to 80 for silver oxide, and its voltage falls steadily through its life, which degrades accuracy in meters and watches.
How much runtime does the extra height buy?
Plenty. At 70 to 80 mAh the SR754 carries three to four times the capacity of a thin cell like the 315 in the same diameter. Devices designed around it, such as penlights and medical instruments, exploit that headroom, so substituting anything smaller is not an option.
