Hearing aid (zinc-air)

Size 675 (blue) battery: equivalents & specs

Size 675, with a blue tab, is the largest standard hearing aid battery: a 1.45 volt zinc-air cell, 11.6 mm across and 5.4 mm tall, packing 600 to 650 mAh. It serves power behind-the-ear aids and cochlear implant processors, running nine to twenty days.

⚠️ Button batteries are dangerous if swallowed. The 675's size makes it especially hazardous; store it in original packaging away from children.

Buying and replacement notes

The 675 shares its case dimensions with the LR44/SR44 button family, but do not interchange them: zinc-air delivers far more energy at a lower 1.45 volts and needs air holes to breathe, while an LR44 in a hearing aid sags immediately under the load. Cochlear implant users often need the special high-power 675 variants (sometimes tabbed differently) their processor maker specifies.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an LR44 or 357 in place of a 675?
No. They match in size, but a hearing aid draws current that alkaline and silver cells of this size cannot sustain, and the aid's voltage expectations are tuned to zinc-air's 1.45 V plateau. Only a zinc-air 675 (blue tab, PR44) works properly.
How long does a 675 last in a cochlear processor?
Far less than in a hearing aid: processors draw heavy current, so two to five days from a pair or trio of high-power 675 cells is normal. Use the implant-grade cells your processor maker recommends; standard 675s trigger low-battery warnings early.
Why does the packaging say to keep the tab on?
The tab seals the air holes that activate zinc-air chemistry. Sealed, the cell keeps for three years or more; peeled, it self-discharges within weeks even unused. Peel only when installing, wait a minute, and never re-tape a peeled cell expecting to pause it.
