Hearing aid (zinc-air)

Size 5 (red) battery: equivalents & specs

Size 5, tabbed in red, is the rarest of the zinc-air hearing aid batteries: 1.45 volts, 5.8 mm across and just 2.15 mm tall, with only 30 to 35 mAh. A short-lived generation of ultra-tiny in-canal aids used it, and few current models do.

Buying and replacement notes

This size delivers only one to three days per cell, which is why the market moved back to size 10 as micro aids got more efficient instead. If you own an aid that takes size 5, buy from suppliers with verified turnover, since slow-selling stock loses quality with age, and consider asking your audiologist whether newer size-10 models would serve you better at replacement time.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find size 5 batteries at the pharmacy?
Few hearing aids ever used the size, and most that did are aging out of service, so pharmacies dropped it. Major brands still produce runs of the PR63; hearing-care clinics and online hearing aid retailers are the dependable sources.
How long does a size 5 battery last?
One to three days is normal; the cell holds only around 32 mAh. Deactivating the aid overnight by opening the battery door stretches it. If that battery budget frustrates you, newer micro aids using size 10 (yellow) run twice as long or more.
Is any other battery a substitute for size 5?
No. Its 5.8 x 2.15 mm case fits nothing else in the zinc-air lineup, and non-zinc-air cells of similar size cannot feed a hearing aid's current draw. The red tab is unique to this size across all manufacturers.
