A23 battery: equivalents & specs

The A23 is a stubby 12 volt alkaline battery, 10.3 mm across and 28.5 mm long, built from eight tiny cells stacked in one sleeve. Sold as 23A, MN21, V23GA or L1028, it powers garage remotes, doorbells and other small radio transmitters.

  • A27: Slimmer 12 V cousin (8.0 mm vs 10.3 mm diameter) with less than half the capacity; the two are not interchangeable.

Buying and replacement notes

Twelve volts from something smaller than a AAA surprises people: inside are eight LR932 button cells in series, which explains both the high voltage and the tiny 55 mAh capacity. It exists purely for intermittent transmitter duty. Radio range shrinking is the classic sign of a fading A23. The similarly named A27 is thinner and even lower capacity; remotes are keyed to one or the other.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

What battery is equivalent to the A23?
23A, MN21, V23GA, 8LR932, L1028 and LRV08 are all the same 12 V alkaline stack, 10.3 x 28.5 mm. Every major brand makes one. The A27 is not equivalent: it is 2.3 mm thinner and will rattle or lose contact in an A23 compartment.
Why does my garage remote use a 12 V battery?
Simple radio transmitters get better range and simpler circuits from a higher voltage supply, and they transmit only for fractions of a second, so the A23's tiny 55 mAh lasts a year or more. It is a design trade of capacity for voltage in minimal space.
How long does an A23 last?
Typically one to two years in a remote used several times daily. Because the load is brief pulses, life correlates with clicks, not calendar time. Falling range or needing to stand closer to the garage is the standard replacement signal.
