A11 battery: equivalents & specs

The A11 is a small 6 volt alkaline battery, 10.3 mm across and 16 mm long, built from four stacked cells and rated about 38 mAh. Also marked 11A, MN11 or E11A, it powers compact garage and gate remotes and keychain transmitters.

Compatible replacements

  • A23: Longer 12 V relative in the same diameter; despite the resemblance the voltages differ, so never interchange.

Buying and replacement notes

The A11 looks like a shortened A23, and that is literally what it is: the same 10.3 mm stack with four cells instead of eight, giving 6 volts instead of 12. The resemblance makes misordering easy, but the compartments differ in length and the voltages are incompatible. Availability is thinner than for the A23; supermarkets rarely stock it, so order ahead of need.

⚠️ Keep away from children. Swallowed button batteries, especially 20 mm lithium coins, cause severe injury within hours. If a child swallows one, call the 24/7 National Battery Ingestion Hotline (US) at 800-498-8666 or poison control at 800-222-1222 immediately. What every parent should know.

Frequently asked questions

What is equivalent to an A11 battery?
11A, E11A, MN11, L1016 and G11A are all the same 6 V alkaline stack at 10.3 x 16 mm. There is no lithium or silver drop-in. The 12 V A23 shares the diameter but is 12.5 mm longer and doubles the voltage, so it is not a substitute.
My remote takes a stubby battery. Is it A11 or A23?
Measure the length: about 16 mm means A11 (6 V), about 28.5 mm means A23 (12 V). The compartment or the old cell will also carry the code. Getting this wrong either leaves the remote dead (6 V where 12 was needed) or risks damaging it.
How long does an A11 last?
Around a year in a remote clicked several times a day. Its 38 mAh only serves brief transmit pulses, so any fault that keeps the transmitter awake, like a jammed button, will flatten it within days. Shrinking range signals replacement time.
