LIR2016 battery: equivalents & specs

The LIR2016 is a rechargeable lithium-ion coin cell matching the CR2016's 20 by 1.6 mm dimensions, with a nominal 3.6 volts and just 18 to 25 mAh. Like all LIR cells, it suits only devices explicitly designed around Li-ion voltage and charging.

Compatible replacements

  • CR2016: Primary 3 V cell of the same size; not electrically equivalent.

⚠️ Not a drop-in replacement for the CR2016; the 3.6-4.2 V range can damage 3 V circuits.

Buying and replacement notes

The thinner the LIR cell, the harsher the trade-offs: barely 20 mAh, modest cycle life, and self-discharge of a few percent per month that leaves a charged spare half-empty within a year. Its niche is rechargeable-by-design hardware and hobby builds. For everything that shipped with a CR2016, replace with a CR2016.

Frequently asked questions

Is the LIR2016 interchangeable with the CR2016?
No. They share only the case size. The LIR2016 runs at 3.6 to 4.2 V and holds about a quarter of the capacity, then needs recharging in a proper Li-ion coin charger. Devices designed for a 3 V primary cell should get a CR2016.
Why would anyone choose an LIR2016?
Rechargeability in a wafer-thin package. A design that charges its own cell, such as a slim wearable or a solar gadget, saves users from buying disposables. Outside such designs the cell's small capacity and higher voltage are pure disadvantages.
How many times can an LIR2016 be recharged?
Manufacturers quote around 500 cycles to 80 percent capacity with gentle charging at 4.2 V termination. Real-world life depends on depth of discharge and temperature; shallow cycles in room conditions can exceed the rating, deep daily drains will not.
